Benefits of Sand Play

The warmer weather is upon us and there is no better time to have some fun in the sun, and what could be better than sand play? Children can have hours of fun playing in the sand when they are young. Not only is it entertaining for children, but it also provides a variety of positives that can help in a child’s development.

27550_Palm Beach Sandpit_Life_4As young children become more aware of their environment and surroundings, they begin to learn and develop skills that are essential for everyday life.

Some benefits include:

  • Development of fine motor skills
  • Improved hand and eye coordination
  • Encourage imaginative and creative play by making up stories
  • Sensory development

Children develop their fine motor skills through different tactile textures and the amount of force they exert when doing activities. Sand is a great resource for developing these skills as they are in control of what they do such as let the sand run through their fingers, dig a hole or make a sand castle.

By creating an environment where children can play with sand, they are able to control their overall body movements and develop a creative story. Little ones can pretend to live in a castle as they dig a moat with a shovel and watch their story come to life. This develops their social skills with other children as they have to learn how to negotiate the storyline and play the role of a character.

Apart from the hours of fun that sand play provides, it can also help develop skills that are used later in life such as holding a pen correctly, writing, touch-typing or playing an instrument.

Plum Play has a range of sand pits and sand tables available for children to enjoy!
