6 Benefits of Role Play

Is your child always wanting to help you do the chores? Pretending to be a chef in the kitchen or a race car driver with toy cars? Role play isn’t just for fun, it has multiple benefits that can help your child’s physiological and cognitive development. It helps their brain and learning capabilities by perceiving situations and re-enacting them. The process of role play helps aid in their learning experience, self esteem & strengthens the relationship you have with them. 27503_New Indri_life_11 1) Pretending: Pretending enables a child to explore their creative side and combines their perception of adult interaction with how the world works. With saying this, the act of pretending is a steep learning curve for daily activities and can essentially prepare them for the future. 1) Social Interaction: When a child is involved in role play, they quickly learn the ways to handle different situations when others are involved. This encourages negotiation, cooperation and patience. Not only this, role play enables children to “put themselves in the shoes of others and be empathetic & considerate of those around them”. 2) Language Development: When children put themselves into the shoes of another, they begin to talk in a way they would normally not. It allows them to be expressive and develop a vocabulary they may not necessarily use or need until they are older. 3) Imagination: The act of role play allows a child’s imagination to run wild. As a child expresses their imagination they begin to realise what can be achieved if they put their mind to it. This is an essential skill that is highly valued by everyone in all stages of life. 4) Self-Esteem: As a child develops their own character, you are enhancing their self-esteem. By allowing them to develop story lines and the direction of play, they have power, thus improving their overall self-esteem. At Plum, we pride ourselves on allowing a child’s development to grow. We understand that a child’s life skills can be formed from a young age and that’s why we create toys that aid in this process, so go on, let the fun begin!
